Helgi Grétarsson

Helgi Áss Grétarsson (born 18 February 1977) is an Icelandic chess grandmaster (GM). In 1994 he won the World Junior Chess Championship under 20. One year prior to that he played as a goalkeeper for the Icelandic national soccer team in the 1993 UEFA European Under-16 Championship.Helgi graduated in 2005 with a law degree but in 2018, after many years of hiatus, he became ''Icelandic Chess Champion'' for the first time.In April 2024 Helgi became the Icelandic Chess Champion for the second time.
